Before assembling a kit, understand what each tool does. Buying many items without knowing how to use them can increase costs and make the work more confusing. Your first goal is to perform basic tasks with control and organization.

This module introduces the most common tools, the reading the measurements and a training sequence. The final choice of material depends on the menu, the contracted function, and what the operation already provides.
Upon completion, you should be able to
- Relate a tool to its function.
- Interpreting measurements in a recipe.
- Setting up a simple bench for water training.
- Distinguish between items essential to your service and equipment for specific uses.
1. Start with the meter.
A jigger, also called a jigger or dispenser, helps to dispense a specific quantity of liquid. There are models with different capacities and markings. Don’t assume that all sides of all jiggers have the same volume.

Read the markings on your jigger and know its capacity. Position it stably, check the level, and transfer the liquid carefully. A spilled or carelessly used jigger does not guarantee accuracy.
First, practice on a firm surface. Then, practice the measuring and pouring motion without unnecessarily crossing your arms. Clean up spills before the area becomes slippery.
Water measurement training
Choose two markings on your jigger. Make ten transfers of each measurement, using a measuring container with appropriate graduations. Observe whether you stop at the same level and if you lose any liquid during the transfer. Repeat the exercise, correcting one movement at a time. The goal is consistency, not a speed contest.
2. Understand the recipe units.
A milliliter, indicated by ml, is a unit of volume. A recipe that calls for 50 ml is not asking for “a little” nor necessarily “a dose” of the available utensil. The word “dose” can be used informally with different meanings.
Expressions like “parts,” “drops,” and “to complete” also appear. They require context. A part is a ratio: in a proportion of one part of one ingredient to two parts of another, the second quantity is double the first.
“Complete” must be accompanied by the container, ice, and a final volume specified in the operation sheet. Without this information, two people could prepare very different drinks with the same description.
Do not automatically convert a measurement written in ounces to the size of a cup. Consult the adopted measuring sheet and use a compatible utensil. The important thing is to work with a defined reference that is shared by the team.
3. Cocktail shaker: mix, chill and dilute
A cocktail shaker is used to shake ingredients when that method is part of the recipe. There are models with different parts and closure mechanisms. Familiarize yourself with yours before starting to serve food.

When you blend ice, you’re not just combining liquids. The process also alters temperature, dilution, and texture. Therefore, the choice of method and the repetition of the procedure influence the result.
Practice fitting and opening the container without placing it near another person’s face. Work with space and follow the proper usage instructions for the model. If the fitting fails or the material is damaged, stop practicing.
Carbonated drinks
Do not shake carbonated drinks in a cocktail shaker. The gas can create pressure and cause the contents to explode. In recipes that call for a carbonated topping, follow the instructions and add it at the indicated stage, usually without close shaking.
4. Bar spoon and mixing bowl
A bar spoon helps with mixing, guiding movements, and performing tasks required during preparation. Its elongated handle makes it easier to work with taller containers. This doesn’t, however, make any spoon an exact measuring tool for sugar or liquid.

When a recipe calls for a measurement, use the reference defined in the recipe sheet. If the operation uses a spoonful of measurement, the person must know and standardize the utensil used.
The mixing vessel allows you to stir ingredients with ice before straining, if that is the chosen method. Practice with water to get a feel for swirling the liquid and avoid abruptly hitting the utensil against the container.
5. Strainers: choose according to the preparation.
A strainer helps separate the liquid from elements that shouldn’t end up in the serving glass. Depending on the preparation, you may need to retain the ice used in the mixture, fruit fragments, or other particles.

There are spring-loaded strainers, perforated models, and fine sieves. The combination should depend on the desired result and the recipe procedure. Using a fine sieve unnecessarily can slow down the process; failing to use one when the texture requires it can alter the beverage.
Also pay attention to how it fits together. An unstable utensil increases the chance of spilling. Keep the strainers clean and readily available in their designated place.
6. Macerator, knife and cutting board
A muddler helps to work with solid ingredients according to the recipe. The force applied should have a purpose: to extract juice, mix, or release aromas. Crushing all ingredients with maximum force is not a universal method.

When preparing fruit, use an appropriate knife and cutting board with a stable surface. Keep your hands out of the way of cutting. The choice and hygiene of utensils should follow the operating procedure.

Organize a designated area for food preparation. Avoid cutting on the countertop among glasses and bottles. When finished, store the knife in a way that prevents anyone from searching for a sharp object hidden among other materials.
7. Ice requires its own container.
The ice that goes into the drink is an ingredient. Use a suitable and sanitized ice scoop or tongs, according to the service organization. Do not use a glass to remove ice.

Besides the risk of breakage, a glass used in this way can carry contaminants into the ice reservoir. The ice container should have a designated storage location and should not be placed on dirty surfaces.
A cooler organizes preservation, but it doesn’t replace hygiene and ice control. In the organization module, we will relate this care to the complete workflow of the station.
8. Support cups, containers and bottles
The glass is part of the recipe. Its size and shape affect the final quantity, the space for ice, and the presentation. Before serving, familiarize yourself with the available models and the recommended serving size for each beverage.
Food storage containers must be suitable for use with food, be intact, and have sufficient identification. A reused bottle without a clear label can lead to ingredient errors and compromise preservation.
Don’t judge a container solely by its appearance. Check its purpose, cleanliness, and the storage procedure for the product that will be placed in it.
9. Specific equipment comes later.
Siphons, blowtorches, blenders, and other equipment may have a function in certain menus. They are not automatic requirements to begin learning the profession.
Pressurized containers and equipment involving heat require training, inspection, and use according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not improvise capsules, connections, or opening mechanisms. If you are unfamiliar with the equipment, seek guidance before using it.
The best next item to buy is the one that meets a real need of your work. Also consider transportation, cleaning, maintenance, and availability of replacement parts.
10. Your kit should have a logical structure.
Before heading out to an event, separate the materials by function: measuring, mixing, straining, preparing, and organizing. Check that you can identify each item and that it is intact and clean.
Bring only what was agreed upon and what you know how to use. Confirm what will be provided on-site. A personal kit will not compensate for the lack of basic infrastructure for an operation.
Activity: Set up a training bench.
Choose a recipe from the course and describe which tools it requires. Without preparing the drink, place the utensils on a table and simulate the movements with water. Note where you need to retrieve, return, or sanitize each item. Then, remove everything that wasn’t used and explain why each remaining tool is there.
Choose the cup based on the recipe and operation.
Tall glasses, such as highball and Collins glasses, are often used in elongated recipes with ice and accompaniments. Short glasses, such as rocks or old-fashioned glasses, are suitable for other presentations. Stemped glasses allow you to hold the drink without directly holding the bowl. These names help with communication with the team, but they don’t guarantee a single, unified function.

At the event, check the actual glass size provided by the vendor. Two vendors may use the same name for glasses of different volumes. A serving order must match the amount of beverage, the space occupied by ice, and the margin for serving without spilling. Don’t increase the recipe just because the available glass is larger.
Also consider transportation, replacement, and collection. A delicate item may require extra care in high-traffic areas. Chipped or cracked glasses should be set aside according to service procedures and not returned for service.
Compatibility test
Separate the glass, ice, and water according to the measurements on a form. Simulate the preparation and check the final level. Record the model and capacity of the container. If there is any incompatibility, inform the manager before opening, without improvising new proportions based on the guest’s order.
Make a list of materials needed for assembly and disassembly.
Organize the kit by function: measuring, mixing, straining, fruit preparation, and serving. For each item, record the quantity, condition upon departure, responsible party, and storage location. Identify what belongs to the team, the space, or the rental company.
A single inexpensive utensil that’s missing can disrupt an entire station. Therefore, the inspection needs to verify functionality and compatibility, as well as quantity. Does the lid close? Does the strainer fit? Does the jigger have the markings on the order form? Can the equipment be sanitized during use?
When returning items, use the same form to record returns, breakages, and pending items. Don’t leave the verification until after boxes from different suppliers have already been mixed up.
The list below compiles all the materials from the original booklet and the article about investing in the profession. Use it as a planning reference: the menu, your role, the required uniform, and what the operation provides will determine what you really need to bring or acquire. Tables and bar modules are options; caps, brooches, pins, and decorations have been separated for easier reference. Finally, also compare the kit options.
The prices listed are historical and have not been replicated as current prices. When evaluating an offer, check the exact product, dimensions, material, reviews, seller, and total cost including shipping. A kit only makes sense when its parts meet the intended task.

Bartender kits: compare the options
Compare the starter kit and the seven- and eleven-piece Boston sets. The term “complete” used in an advertisement refers to the composition of that set: none of these kits replaces the entire materials list of the module. Check the included pieces, the size of the shaker, the measurements of the jigger, and what you already own.

Check if you learned it.
You should be able to explain three differences: measuring is not estimating; beating is not the same as stirring; and ice for consumption is not cleaning supplies. If you can also justify your kit based on the menu, you already have a better criterion than buying an entire list without understanding its function.
